Windracers explores whether electric always means greener in The Engineer

Windracers Group CEO Simon Thompson has featured in The Engineer exploring whether electric always means greener, and discusses why our autonomous aircraft Windracers ULTRA run on petrol.

In the piece, Simon sets out why combustion engines remain the practical choice for middle-mile air cargo today. He emphasises that this decision is based not only on cost and performance but also on carbon impact.

Simon explores the practical challenges of electric propulsion in remote and long-distance operations – particularly the lack of charging infrastructure and the lower energy density of batteries compared to fuel, both of which affect reliability and range.

“It is not always as simple as ‘electric good, petrol bad’”, Simon writes, “If we only chase the solutions that look good on paper, we risk missing the ones that work better in practice.”
